  • Environment variables are stored in the variable $ENV{'variable_name'} where variable_name is one of the Variable_names listed above. Using this method, you can extract various information about your operating environment. This comes in handy when you need to know information about the hosts involved, the script name and paths, user IP, etc... this method is used to create many useful programs for webmasters such as banner rotators, click-through counters, page counters that keep track of unique hits, mailing lists, link pages, search engines and many others.
